Symbol set check

982 symbols across 15 sets, measured rather than counted by eye. The last column matters more than the total: symbols outside the Basic Multilingual Plane are drawn from the colour-emoji font, cost two UTF-16 units each, and are the ones that render as a hollow box on older Android builds and some in-app browsers.

404 of the 982 (41%) sit outside the BMP. Smileys & Faces is the riskiest set at 94%, because most of those are full-colour emoji rather than simple line glyphs. Everything else is old, well-supported blocks — arrows, borders, dividers and math symbols have shipped in system fonts for decades and render nearly everywhere, though they do not always keep the same width as surrounding text.

Two consequences for the field you are pasting into. First, a row of twelve colour emoji can cost 24 units, so a decorated bio line burns through a character limit twice as fast as it looks. Second, if the same set looks crisp on your phone and shows boxes on a friend's, the glyphs are the reason — swap the emoji-heavy sets for arrows or borders, which are plain text glyphs everywhere.

Display width, not just count

A symbol is one character to a validator and either one or two columns on screen. The column that matters for layout is the second one — every glyph whose East Asian Width is Wide or Fullwidth takes the space of two Latin letters, so dropping one into the middle of a name pushes everything after it sideways by one position.

349 of 982 symbols across the library are two columns wide. The split is not random: whole families are wide and whole families are narrow. Smileys & Faces is almost entirely wide at 96%, while Math & Science is almost entirely narrow at 0%.

This is what makes a mixed selection look wrong even when it is technically fine. Arrows, math symbols, brackets and dividers are narrow, so a border made from them aligns with Latin text. Hearts drawn from the symbol block, stars, flowers and weather glyphs are wide, so a border built from those does not line up with the name inside it — the top rule and the bottom rule will be different lengths on screen while being the same length in the source. Pick one width class per decoration and the alignment takes care of itself.
