Measured: what each style does to your text

Every number below comes from running the styles in this page's tool over the same test word, dark soul (9 UTF-16 units). "Units" is how apps actually count a field: characters outside the Basic Multilingual Plane (most emoji, some decorative letters) count as two. Plain text is the baseline at 1.00×.

5 of the 5 styles come out longer than plain text — because the style stacks a combining mark on top of each letter instead of swapping it. Zalgo (Light) is the most expensive at 3.11×, so a name that barely fits a fixed field limit in plain letters will not fit in that style. Shorten the word first, then switch styles.

Symbol set check

286 symbols across 4 sets, measured rather than counted by eye. The last column matters more than the total: symbols outside the Basic Multilingual Plane are drawn from the colour-emoji font, cost two UTF-16 units each, and are the ones that render as a hollow box on older Android builds and some in-app browsers.

91 of the 286 (32%) sit outside the BMP. Chess & Cards is the riskiest set at 72%, because most of those are full-colour emoji rather than simple line glyphs. Everything else is old, well-supported blocks — arrows, borders, dividers and math symbols have shipped in system fonts for decades and render nearly everywhere, though they do not always keep the same width as surrounding text.

Two consequences for the field you are pasting into. First, a row of twelve colour emoji can cost 24 units, so a decorated bio line burns through a character limit twice as fast as it looks. Second, if the same set looks crisp on your phone and shows boxes on a friend's, the glyphs are the reason — swap the emoji-heavy sets for arrows or borders, which are plain text glyphs everywhere.
